TEOMCROTE = TEOTWAWKI on steroids! The End Of Mankind's Current Reign Over The Earth takes into account that our ancestors were neither suicidal, stupid, nor our genetic inferiors but still wound up getting wiped off the Earth. Whereas CSER [cser.org: Centre for Study of Existential Risk] tries to PREVENT this dispensation from coming to an end, TEOMCROTE works from the eventuality/possibility/probability that the end our age takes place and what to do then

movies that offer inspiration, ideas, insight etc

all kinds of movies perhaps offer an idea that is relevant to surviving 2012, or visualize some concept well that serves to inspire or inform. Any movie can in part, completely, or if only for a single word or sentence be valuable in grasping the necessities or seriousness we all face.

You can place your suggestions with your explanation why here.

6 Days 7 Nights

Another Harrison Ford movie... No, i'm not a HF freak
Anyway, he and Anne Heche get stuck on a small island in the south pacific, looks great, waterfall and everything, peacoc k and pig to eat, no worries, right?
And again, the danger, the moral of the story, comes from pirates, from PEOPLE, not from the elements.

I think such movies, if nothing else, give one a proper sense of what challenges we might all be facing if TSHTF in 2012. Everyone's talking resources, preparing by gathing food, water, energy, shielding against radiation maybe, but it's good to stress that all of those things aren't INTELLIGENT obstacles; people are; they're not like food or water that may elude one at some point, people can hide, hunt you, trick you, etc. etc. etc. They're inventive and relentless, they can come alone or in masses, from the front, from the side, from both...

6 Days 7 Nights does a good job of reminding us that the biggest danger that faces us in any survival situation is that presented by people, not Nibiru, tsunamis, starvation, or whatever. A better choice for entertainment perhaps than any wishy-washy 'how-do-i-find-water?' film that not only deals with unintelligent threats, like water or thirst, but that implies by omission that the people threat either doesn't exist or isn't worth mentioning.

The Mosquito Coast

VOOR NEDERLANDS, ZIE ONDER

an oldie but goodie with a young Harrison Ford as an ingenious inventor who turns his back on the USA and starts a new life in South America.
Interesting movie as it gives a good feeling for starting a civilization all over again, with all the thrills and dangers that come with that.
Not such a nice ending but a good movie all-in-all.

Relative to 2012 is that these people [Ford and fam] build a nice setup in the Amazon but then jealous and parasitical factors show up to spoil the fun. Made me think of what Ivan Stein says about setting up camp in some arid region where no one would even bother looking for someone to rob...

HET INTERESSANTE AAN DEZE FILM IS HOE DEZE ONDERNEMENDE VRIJDENKER, GESPEELD DOOR HARRISON FORD, HET KLAARSPEELT OM IETS OP TE ZETTEN IN DE JUNGLE OM VERVOLGENS GEDWARSBOOMD TE WORDEN DOOR FIGUREN DIE JALOERS ZIJN OP ZIJN SUCCES OF ERVAN WILLEN PROFITEREN, WAARDOOR ALLES OP Z'N GAT VALT.
DOET DENKEN AAN IVAN STEINS WAARSCHUWING OM ERGENS IN EEN ONHERBERGZAAM GEBIED JE TE VESTIGEN TENEINDE TE VOORKOMEN DAT JE SUCCES ALLEEN ERTOE LEIDT DAT ANDEREN JE VINDEN EN DE VRUCHTEN VAN JE MOEITE AFPAKKEN.

How Beer Saved The World

]Documentary on how beer has always been an important part of civilization, perhaps at many turns decisively so.

Re: movies that offer inspiration, ideas, insight etc

"They Live" and "Dark City" are a couple of other movies that come to mind that concern the aspect of us being asleep and controlled by other alien races (one being hive-minded).

I'm not sure if I'm posting these suggestions in the right section (as there are several movie related [sign in to see URL] kind-of overlap in some categories) emoticon

Knowing

okay, just finished watching Knowing because Chillin advised it...
Wow, that movie was wrong on so many levels... and at the same time i get what you mean, Chillin, it does give one a momentary feeling of "Hey, what if the govt suddenly said TSHTF, how prepared would i be?"
I WILL be using scenes in the movie for my documentary, for how it illustrates a city falling to pieces is phenomenal. So, thanks, Chillin! emoticon

I can't not trash the movie, though, for so many reasons, first of which i guess is that, yeah, if you wait until the govt warns you, you're screwed; who can consider that scenario entertainment?
The movie starts with channeled information which is always a sign of the savior authority trauma: you consider yourself a victim and need some other-dimensional or divine source to save you;
Then it becomes clear that there are these angels out to save a few, another link to the savior authority trauma, your (god and his) angels to look over you, the victim that needs god to save you;
Then it turns out that ALL life on Earth is going to end; the world is 4 BILLION years old, no Sun destruction as long as plant and animal species have been evolving, but, lo and behold, mankind arrives on the planet and the end of the world is upon us, i.e. man is the center of the universe and as soon as he arrives TSHTF; that's overcompensating for the victim attitude: now mankind is all there is!

When the ET's showed themselves, god, then i really had to laugh! Of course the true nature of the movie was revealed when the ET's looked like angels as they alighted into their spaceships...

This movie was about celebration of the victim attitude, leading to inevitable death, except for the saved, i.e. those who will continue on in a world where their life and safety is ruled over by divine grace and mad random danger...

The Great Escape

Great Escape is the dramatized true story of allied soldiers/officers escaping from a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. It reminds one of the popular series ]Hogan's Heroes.

]The Great Escape was also the name of a survival group, supposedly, that i was part of until ]the idiot leader self-destructed his own initiative by deciding to head to France.

Anyway, my remark is about the movie [but i couldn't omit the connection to my survival experience]. We see how prisoners of war escape their camp, impressive enough, but then truly screw up once they're out. They really appear to have given escape OUT OF THE COUNTRY almost no thought at all. They arrange public transportation within an unfriendly country, that's it. They largely get caught at railroad terminals, as one might expect.

Why? Why go to the trouble of escape after having been holed up in prison camps for more than 3 years, and not give the rest decent thought?

This is what i see online everywhere when it comes to people talking about TEOTWAWKI; people consider finding a safe place, they consider building their bunker, stocking up on food and amunition,, but they hardly talk about their health or future at all. Do they think that their work is enough? Do they think that while their world is obviously a mess, that it'll suddenly fall into place again because they made some effort? It's complete and utter madness and completely and utterly common, apparently. As i mentioned, it's a true story.

Surviving TEOTWAWKI is just the beginning. I think maybe people get impressed with themselves because they're the only ones talking about 2012 at all, but just because you might appear to be doing BETTER than others definitely doesn't mean you are actually doing WELL. Survive 2012 and die in the aftermath, it's just like escaping from the prisoner-of-war camp and then dying in Germany without ever making it across the border.

In a negative way i feel the classic all-star-cast movie The Great Escape offers a great example of how NOT to go about preparing for 2012. Just as a friendly warning. Appropriately, only a handful actually escaped, some were recaptured, and 50 of the 76 who got out of the prison camp wound up getting executed...

cataclysm

World turned out to be a whole lot better than the trailer suggested. The end was better and not quite as dramatic.
I recommend watching it to anybody interested in a realistic approach to limited cataclysm. At any rate it gives realistic relational drama for the situation, but it's light enough at times and sometimes even very funny.
