good alround breeds
Scots Grey
The Scots Grey is a very old breed dating back to the sixteenth century. Scots Grey are extremely hardy and were originally know as the cottager's fowl. They are excellent foragers.
From Choosing breeds:
[...]dual purpose [chicken breeds] are not as good in producing eggs as the Leghorn or Rhode Island Red breeds, but they have much better meatiness. They are also inferior in meat production characteristics as compared to the commercial meat-type hybrid varieties, but they are much better egg producers. Typical breeds in this dual purpose category are New Hampshires, Plymouth Rocks, and Wyandottes.
New Hampshire.........................................Plymouth Rock...................................Wyandottes

Salmon Faverolles
Salmon Faverolles rooster & hen
Having experienced in La Gomera how terribly annoying dogs and roosters can be, disturbing everyone's sleep, i was surfing in search of less noisy breeds of rooster.
The consensus seems to be that it's generally about individual roosters and their individual conditions, but one forum post somewhere suggested that Salmon Faverolles roosters are quiet proud roosters that don't crow much.
Salmon Faverolles are apparently a quiet breed. Most sites even warn to keep them away from other chicken breeds as the others will make the Faverolles their BlTCH!

Standard Old English Game
According to Harvey Ussery in this OneRadioNetwork podcast (at 35 min.) mentions this breed as a great natural brood chicken. So the hens are the best natural kind of mothers. Downside to this is that they won't lay in winter. These hens will brood any eggs you lay under them and take good care of them.
This is also a species that's great at foraging for their own food.
Harvey also mentions that this is the best-tasting breed (though not large like hybrid species).
