Human Waste
This seems to be a subject that few people now days are willing to talk about, besides isn't that why we invented the flush...lol
In a community, such as the one we are considering, it is a very important issue, and one we can not afford to shy away from.
So we need to talk about, composting toilets, reed beds etc.
Lets here your thoughts on this stinky subject.

Re: Human Waste
i have an ebook on 'humanure'. Of course haven't gotten around to reading it yet...
I imagine composting other things can be combined with whatever outhouse facilities get set up. Good compost is a combination of a number of different ingredients, usually a mineral source, an energy source, and others. See Dirt the Movie to get a nice idea.
Maybe a seat over a pit over which one throws some sawdust/straw/whatever, which is also used for putting on kitchen scraps. Compost/manure/soil being the premium product that it is, on the island, this is more than an efficient solution.
With the semi-arid climate on location, a closed off pit might work best. They had this technique in India for building a pit, !@#$ it full, took about a year, then let it 'work' for another year or so and they used that as manure.
All of this, whatever we come up with, would of course also necessarily solve the problem of polluting the water that flows on to the dam (which would be asking for all kinds of trouble).

Re: Human Waste
I also have a pretty good book on human waste and various different types of composting toilets.
Composting toilets can range from a hole in the floor, to the very elaborate self contained units.
Of course, with each method you will find the costs involved match, hence from free to several thousands.

Re: Human Waste
We have a compost toilet outside our house.
They are very simple to build, and easy to use.
Concerned about heat and odours over there though, might be a bit pongy!!!! We could grow lots of lavender and rosemary nearby
