Timetables and Project Management
What type of timescales are are working to in regard to creating the community, or are we just letting nature take it's course?
I personally believe that we need to be following and setting targets that we can all agree on, if we are working to a deadline of 2012, then we have little to no time left to be messing around.
Considering the economic times that we live in, and also the fact that many prospective members will be short of financial assets would it not be a wise idea to create and follow some form of Project Management?
Let's hear your thoughts on this important topic.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
Eight steps to creating your own sustainable Community
You might think that guidelines for eco-village development would mostly have to do with their "eco" aspect. That is, how to handle the bio-system and built environment. These are certainly important but in researching this issue and interviewing many people with extensive community experience, we have learned that the physical systems are the easiest part. They are also the most variable. The details depend strongly on the specifics of the community, its location, purpose, and composition. These guidelines here, focus on where we perceive the need to be. The social process of eco-village development.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
I'm just happy anyone's coming at all...
Don't know if it's possible for people to plan around this and if it's difficult, whether they'd be helped by a plan that might offer (even more) pressure.
I imagine that getting ready is more about letting go of where one's at than focusing on where one's going, and a plan for going is about the latter.
But if someone thinks it will help, who am i to argue. I'm guessing it's premature, though. Perhaps it's only relevant to make plans for the one's who have already cut all ties, i.e. made it to the location. I'm not discriminating against those who haven't made it yet but i'm imagining they have more on their minds than planning for a situation that's not theirs yet.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
i WAS thinking, for instance, about water quality. I think it's possible to buy a water purification system for anyone staying in San Sebastián for around € 500 and that money and those components will have to be planned for. Everyone bringing their own filters would be madness.
What else?

Re: Timescales and Project Management
What about seeds, are we going to buy seeds as a community or is it going to be each to their own?
We have already purchased about 200 euros worth of heirloom seeds, although we are not sure how many of them would 'take' to growing in La Gomera?!
I don't see any reason why these seeds shouldn't be shared amongst community members.
Now, once we all gather on La Gomera, how do we propose dealing with all the costs that we are likely to occur? Such as the rent, food, equipment, bills etc. I suppose most of the costs will be divided equally amongst us, but would this be fair and sustainable for all involved?
Maybe certain food stuffs would work out much cheaper for all involved if we could find some way of buying in bulk. Things like rice, pasta and other staples would be easy to buy in bulk from Tenerife, maybe one big shopping trip over there every month or two should be ok.
[Please add your list of seeds here]

Re: Timescales and Project Management
The Seed is working on the ruin situation as we speak, although being a Spanish island everything is "Tomorrow, tomorrow" I know that is really annoying, especially if you are a Brit, but I don't think we can force this issue too much, as the family members who have control of the ruin, may decide to slam the door shut in our faces.
Now, hopefully the economy in Europe will take a bigger turn for the worse, and that may benefit us as the owners will be hopefully looking for another source of income that we could provide them as rental for the ruin.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
We need a list of priorities concerning what we need to concentrate on first in the valley to make it habitable.
Any thoughts?

Re: Timescales and Project Management
1. Water, or to be more exact dams. We need to install the ram pump, and then hydro generator.
2. I think we should create some hidden storage areas, we don't need to be lugging stuff in and out.
3. Toilet facilities. Not sure how the hell we are going to hide this sort of stuff, but I am sure the SEED will enlighten us...hehe
There is some to be going on with.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
have we got parts for making a ram pump? Or a ram pump? Or at least instructions?
Funds for pipe?
I already have a fine hiding place in the valley. If we arrange the ruin, a new place would be no problem, i'm sure.
By the way, i'm thinking the bunker(s) should be built deeper in the valley, where i was busy already, and less serious bunkers would be the houses we make out of the ruins themselves.
Water, i believe, is indeed a prime concern. Wherever we get busy first, water needs to be diverted to land to start it growing/living and becoming more fertile. The sooner we have good soil, the sooner we'll be able to eat off of it properly. Barring funds, though, that's a matter of time.
Diverting water is for all reasons: soil, energy, domestic uses. Water is life on the island and since there's so much of it in the valley, turning the area green is about fooling around with it intelligently, with imagination, and with passion.
After water, with hydro pump, we have energy too.
So, do we have instructions, parts, and or complete hydro energy and ram pump? Those are things we can accomplish now. Or at the very least a list of parts and prices.

Re: Timescales and Project Management
I think a ram pump is cheap enough to make. We should be able to locate all the needed stuff on either 'our' island or another closer island.
Maybe someone could price the pieces needed, and then we could price or maybe even salvage the parts from somewhere. We need to become more resourceful and not being afraid to make an idiot of ourselves.
Who wants to do the list?
