politics & borders
The Popular Front for the Independence of the Canaries, FREPIC-AWAÑAK, gives brotherly greetings to the attendants and delegates of the different peoples invited to the Conference of Organisations of Indigenous Peoples and thanks for the opportunity offered to denounce the persistance in our times of economic exploitation, social and cultural uprooting and colonial domination that Spain exerts on the Canarian People. With regard to this unjust situation, in opposition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which eludes the legal-political mechanisms for the establishment of a sovereign state, we DECLARE:

low profile living
People have traditionally fled to mountainous regions to escape burocracies and totalitarian regimes that developed in highly populated areas. In effect, mountain cultures are usually specifically the result of people AVOIDING the cultures in densely populated regions; they are not regions that are awaiting 'pacification' or the coming of 'learned men' to liberate them from their supposed barbarism.
In fact, freedom lovers throughout history have sought their liberty by running to the hills.
Moving to the mountains is a simple way to avoid authorities as TPTB tend not to bother much with regions that are far less efficiently exploited than valleys and flatlands.
When one keeps a low profile on top of that, i.e. when one lives in the mountains and keeps to oneself, this is the best recipe for staying off the radar of authorities who might demand you pay taxes or ID yourself.
Even people in mountainous regions, however, have contacts with mainstream authorities and should not be trusted. They might either talk about your location(s) to authorities themselves, or your whereabouts might come to the authorities' attention in a roundabout way. It would be best if NO ONE knew where you live or where your efforts lie [i.e. where your water management, fields, animals, or trees are].
It would therefore also be best to disguise your efforts; an invisible (mainly underground) house is advised, as well as dams that look like natural formations.
In nature it's clear that most species have the most to fear from other individuals of the SAME species. Humans in this day and age suffer the same. You have by far most to fear from other people. No tornado or animal can do as much damage as one well placed whisper.
Trust and belief are for children. An adult trusts nothing or no one. ESPECIALLY don't trust 'nice' folk; they make you feel comfortable telling your secrets but then they can pass these on (undeliberately/unintentionally/subconsciously) to others who are not so nice.
