alternative money systems
When you look into the existing money systems on Earth, it appears that backing by gold is a bad one.
Considering money systems in general, it would be unwise to have a single one at all. Better to have 2 or 3 competing and filling separate niches in society.
One possible system would be a variance of an existing one, i think it's Japanese, whereby hours offer credit; 3 types of appreciating should be alloted different kinds of work:
- simple labor
- educated labor
- solution producing labor
Consider as an example:
- fisherman
- captain
- boat engineer
Another system might have to do with gold, but simply possession of it, gold, silver, copper units.
There are dangers connected to precious metals as currency because monopolization of precious metal ores becomes a problem. Any society that applies it needs to take precautions against these dangers, but they are at least limited when alternative monetary systems exist simultaneously.
I once thought up a third system but i forget what it was.

alternative currencies
In any new post-2012 society, knowledge and genetics will be invaluable and may proove viable as currency.
Seeds, yeast cultures, certain bacteria cultures, bushes, vines, trees, plants, mushrooms,, you name it, what is life without a wide array of all of them?
Post 2012 it would be good to trade such commodities and the idea that they should be given away and shared freely is probably more about stealing than about getting makind back on it's feet.
Hoarding is not the answer but the other extreme, just giving things away, isn't either. Seeds, plants, seedlings, saplings, knowledge,, these things will become part of post-2012 society's currency, most likely. Trading wisely is advised.
