TEOMCROTE = TEOTWAWKI on steroids! The End Of Mankind's Current Reign Over The Earth takes into account that our ancestors were neither suicidal, stupid, nor our genetic inferiors but still wound up getting wiped off the Earth. Whereas CSER [cser.org: Centre for Study of Existential Risk] tries to PREVENT this dispensation from coming to an end, TEOMCROTE works from the eventuality/possibility/probability that the end our age takes place and what to do then

solar cells at subsidy prices

Apparently in the Netherlands last year 17,000 people requested a govt subsidy for placing solar cells and only 4200 had theirs honored, companies faring even worse with 35,000 to 400 being honored.

A Dutch initiative has now ordered 10,000 packages of solar cells in China so it can offer that many parties at prices similar to what subsidized solar cells would cost.

They can be ordered until the end of January and there are 3 packages:
A - € 3304 - 6 panels, 1200 kWh/year [in Holland...]
B - € 6071 - 12 panels,
C - € 6439 - 16 panels, 2500 kWh/year, 185 Wp

opinion for solar

David shared his opinion with me [via gmail] on solar:

I´M DEALIN MY SELF WITH THE SAME TROUBLE AND I FIND OUT THAT SOLAR POWER IS THE KEY.
WITH TWO PANELS THAT GIVES YOU 17 V 15W, TWO 12V DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES, A CHARGE CONTROLER AND AN INVERTER YOU COULD DO SEVERAL THINGS.

I DECIDE THAT WATER IS ABSOLUTELY NECESARY SO WITH THIS EQUIPMENT I CAN MADE WORK A REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM MAY BE FOR 3 OR 4 HOUR IN A DAY.
THE SAME EQUIPMET MAY BE COULD CHARGE A LAPTOP BATTERY, OR SEVERAL RECHARGEABLE AAA, AA, D OR 9V BATTERIES IF THEY ARE PUT IN SERIES TO REACH 12 V.

THE MOST SIMPLE WAY COULD BE JUST A MULTIMETER TO CHECK THE SOLAR PANEL OUTPUT VOLTAGE , AND JUST DIRECTLY CONECT THE SOLAR PANEL TO THE LAP BATTERY AND WITH INCLINATION OR BLOCKING CELLS MAY BE YOU CAN TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED VOLTAGE 17.5 V USUALLY FOR A LAP. THE SAME WAY, YOU CAN CHARGE A CAR BATTERY WHIT A SOLAR PANEL THAT GIVES YOU 17 V AND 15W IN JUST ONE DAY OF GOOD SUN.
THE DISADVANTAGE WITH SOLAR POWER IS THAR BATTERIES ARE VERY HEAVY.

IN MEXICO I CAN BUY A BASIC SOLAR EQUIPMENT FOR LESS THA 500 US DLS, SO, IS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE. A SOLAR PANEL COULD LAST FOR 30 YEARS AND A DEEP CYCLE BATTERY COULD LASS FOR 5 YEARS IF THE INFORMATION I HEARD IS TRUE.
JUST AS AN EXAMPLE, I PUT THE FOLLOING LIST OF A BASIC SOLAR SYSTEM OF A DEALER IN MEX

- 1 PHOTOCELL
- 1 CONTROLLER THIS CONTROLER WORKS AT 12V AND 24V ALSO.
- 2 BATTERIES
- 1 INVERTER
TOT 453.96 USD

THERE´S A LOT OF DEALERS AROUND THE WORLD, I´VE SEEN A PAGE WHERE THEY SELL FOLDABLE SOLAR PANELS!!! AMAZING PRODUCT, AND VERY LIGHT, IDEAL FOR CAMPING.

I thought this guy made it really easy to follow and build.
He bought the solar stove he shows but he demonstrates how to easily build the efficient and hot rocket stove from cheap and easy-to-come-by parts.

Solar Evacuated Tube Vacuum Tubes DIY Test in the Sun
With a (home-made) vacuum tube, one can get water boiling with just a small fresnel lens or parabolic mirror.
GREENPOWERSCIENCE also explains how to make your own.

DIY parabola mirrors

THIS IS AMAZING !!!
If you're able to make a cement parabola of ANY size [contrary to the limitations placed by satellite dishes, glass, etc.], this means that solar energy can truly be harnessed effectively.
One can make a parabolic shape by rotating liquid; rotating an already parabolic shape filled with liquid cement [i.e. NOT concrete!] would prevent the end product from becoming overly heavy.
Normally one would cover the parabola with a thin layer of aluminum (foil) but a large enough dish may reflect enough light to not have this be necessary (if the technology is unfeasible).

Another idea? If the cement finish is polished enough, it may be possible to create a mold to use for creating glass in the shape of fresnel lenses of any size.

Parabolic Mirror from a Trash Can Lid HACK Death Ray Solar
Take one of those survival aluminum safety blankets and tape it to something like a trashcan lid. Have a tiny whole at the back to suck the air from [with your mouth]. Instant parabolic mirror!

small panels

Levin Solwing (vs Anker)

Concentrated Photovoltaic [see link at 7:30 min.] uses mirrors that are 10 x larger than the solar panel they're illuminating, increasing the output of the (expensive) photovoltaic cells.
I myself have fresnel lenses that are 4 x bigger than my solar panels that i hope to use to increase output by 4.
This GREENPOWERSCIENCE experiment attempting to boost solar panel output does suggest that stronger wiring and perhaps cooling are required to achieve such a result.

fresnel lenses

This YouTube video features a Fresnel lens used for heating a length of pipe so steam can be used to power a steam engine.
Impressive, quick, cheap, and simple.

Cool instructable:
You know, those clear, flat things with the ridges, you find them on overhead projectors and rear windows on some buses? The idea is pretty simple: a Fresnel lens is just a normal curved lens chopped into thousands of little rings, but just as effective.
And now, I will impart to you the ultimate source of FREE giant Fresnel lenses: ...Rear Projection TVs.

The basic idea behind a Fresnel lens is simple. Imagine taking a plastic magnifying glass lens and slicing it into a hundred concentric rings (like the rings of a tree). Each ring is slightly thinner than the next and focuses the light toward the center. Now take each ring, modify it so that it's flat on one side, and make it the same thickness as the others. To retain the rings' ability to focus the light toward the center, the angle of each ring's angled face will be different. Now if you stack all the rings back together, you have a Fresnel lens. You can make the lens extremely large if you like. Large Fresnel lenses are often used as solar concentrators to use the 1000 Watts/m2 of free sunlight.

Ebay offers a large fresnel lens for $ 15 but ones the size of a page of paper can cost as little as $ 0.25.

A large fresnel lens can be used to melt concrete. It can be truly powerful and an array of them might be used to heat a furnace... for free.
