Absurd war on terror: Muslim business manager arrested for giving pep talk about 'blowing away' the competition
Saad Allami, a telecommunications sales manager and Canadian citizen of Moroccan descent, says he was improperly arrested by Quebec police and accused of being a terrorist for giving staff "a pep talk [...] about 'blowing away' the competition."
In a lawsuit he has filed against the Procureur General (attorney general) of Quebec, the Surete du Quebec (Quebec police) and the arresting officer, Sgt. Jayson Gauthier, Allami - who manages 2,000 sales reps in seven countries - says "he was illegally arrested and detained on January 24, 2011" after texting the phrase in question in advance of a trade show in New York City. Further, the suit says he "was absurdly and wrongfully accused of being a terrorist, and suffered financial, psychological and moral damages, and significant damages to his reputation." He is seeking $100,000 in damages.
What's more, Allami, who was arrested on the street three days after he sent his threatening message to about 30 reps, didn't even use the phrase "blow away." Rather, the complaint says, the word he used was 'exploser'; it was an anodyne term commonly used in the industry, meaning we are going to make our venture 'take off' 'succeed' 'grow', 'triumph'...

Coca Cola Now Teaching Dietitians Their Education Courses...
You Won't Believe Who's Now Teaching Dietitians Their Education Courses...
According to the American Dietetic Association, registered dietitians are now given formal education by the Coca-Cola Company on how safe its ingredients are. The ADA’s Commission on Dietetic Registration has approved a program created by the Coca Cola Company Beverage Institute for Health and Wellness that will educate dietitians about what it calls “urban myths” about food safety.
The program teaches that fluoride, sugar, artificial colors and non-nutritive sweeteners have been “carefully examined for their effects on children’s health, growth, and development,” and suggests methods dietitians can use to help get rid of “concern among parents about their children's health.”

War on Terror paranoia
FBI says paying for your morning coffee with cash a potential terrorist activity, urges coffee shop owners to report cash-paying customers to authorities
Purchasing a cup of coffee using cash instead of a credit or debit card, using Google Maps to view photos of sporting event stadiums and large cities, and installing software to protect your internet privacy on your mobile phone -- these and many other mundane activities are now considered to be potential terrorist activities by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). And the agency is now distributing a new series of flyers as part of its new "Communities Against Terrorism" (CAT) program that urges shop owners and others to report such "suspicious" activity to authorities.

The above report is frightening, yes, but the French are WAY AHEAD of the Americans in this instance. The About-Picard legislation basically made it possible for the government to invade any citizen's house for burning incense or not having a TV... and that was in the '90's!
Scary people... It's the kind of stuff citizens can use to blackmail each other with or that police officers can threaten citizens with. Such cases have been documented [i.e. it's not just fearmongering or conspiracy theory]. And when THEY come, they confiscate your computer and you'll never see it again...
Accidents waiting to happen. In a basically lawless society such developments are simply a matter of time. There's no winning this fight and no point to making oneself vunerable by living within the borders of such powers. I mean, if you're going to 'change the world', you might as well do it from a safe location. Actually, that may be your only option (as the above examples serve to illustrate).

no good deed ever goes unpunished
Depressed Army reservist attacked by police force after calling for help
Matthew Corrigan, who lives alone with his dog, says in his suit that he called what he thought was a military emotional support hotline in February 2010, but which actually turned out to be the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, after feeling unusually depressed for several days.
"When he stated that he was a veteran, he was asked if he had firearms, to which he said yes. He said nothing about being suicidal or using a firearm or threatening anyone. After a short conversation, Corrigan hung up, turned off the phone, took prescribed sleeping medication, and went to bed," says the complaint.
About 4 a.m. the next morning, Corrigan awoke to a sea of police officers who had surrounded his home and were calling his name on a bullhorn. "There were floodlights outside his front and back doors and an estimated 8 police officers in the back yard and 20 in the front yard," says the complaint.
Corrigan says he then "turned on his phone and discovered that Officer Fischer of the 5th District was calling him, asking him to come out," says the complaint. He complied around 4:50 a.m., locking the door behind him, and was immediately handcuffed and placed in the back of a S.W.A.T. vehicle.

not so funny but definitely frightening
TSA forces new mom to pump milk out of her breasts in public restroom before boarding the plane
A Hawaiian mother was carrying a breast pump and several empty bottles to hold her breast milk later on. Remarkably, upon seeing these empty bottles, the TSA agent in charge lapsed into a power trip frenzy and told her that she could not carry empty bottles on the airplane! the woman was told by the TSA that she would have to fill the empty bottles with breast milk before she could board the plane. The TSA directed this woman to go pump her breast milk in the public restroom.
"I had to stand in front of the mirrors and the sinks and pump my breast in front of every tourist that walked into that bathroom. I was embarrassed and humiliated and then angry that I was treated this way."

brilliant plan to save national economy by shipping rocks across America
Los Angeles museum director unveils brilliant plan to save national economy by shipping rocks across America (satire)
When a Los Angeles museum spent $10 million to move a large boulder across California and use it as a museum attraction, museum director Michael Govan told Reuters the activity was a tremendous boon to the economy. "You couldn't ask for a better gift to the economy right now than to be paying iron workers, truck drivers, concrete, construction workers," he said.

too true
535 AD - 536 was The Year Without Sun. For 18 months the Sun shone bleekly for about 4 hours a day.
In our time the Sun has turned from yellow [i.e. not yellowish white!] to white. Frankly, i don't know what's scarier: that the source of existence on this planet has fundamentally changed it's appearence or the fact that no one's talking about it (and if you point it out to them they look at you like you're talking about Martians).
