Rhodesian Ridgeback
This is as of today my favorite dog!
Rhodesia, modern Zimbabwe, used to be a Dutch colony (like South Africa where the VOC [Dutch East India Company] held sway). My Dutch heritage sometimes inspires me and this is perhaps the one true 'Dutch' dog. Bred by Cornelius van Rooyen [a real Dutch name], it is a true mix of the Netherlands and Africa.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was bred to hunt wild game and as a guardian dog. This dog's independent, mild-tempered, intelligent, fast, strong, and fairly large.
This is a dog to fear nothing or nobody, to be loyal to those who love him, and bred to suffer African heat and drought.

Chihuahua as watchdogs
Justdogbreeds.com agrees that Chihuahua make excellent watchdogs.
I personally love French Bulldogs. They're not friendly to strangers, which is good for a home situation. Justdogbreeds.com, however, gives them a poor rating as watchdogs. (Rhodesian Ridgebacks are also aloof, which is a good trait outside, as well, i think.)

Training Beagle Puppies to Hunt Rabbit
These are great all-round self-suffient country folk and in this vid they're telling about (beagle) rabbit hunting.
Beagles hunt by scent (not sight). She gives a hind leg to the dog when they slaughter a rabbit because that's where the scent's on.

2 notes based on this review:
- when dog breed sites say "intelligence", what they usually really mean is "trainability", i.e. how 'obedient' and 'responsive to (usual modes of) training' they are. Actually, Ridgeback's are too smart to care about performing tricks, hence they are perceived as unable when it's really about being unwilling to perform pointless tasks (which is a good sign of both intelligence and pride if you ask me).
- the Vizsla has a great tracking nose, being both pointer and retreiver; this is one of the main points why it would complement having a Ridgeback so well.
