making music
Though off-the-shelf instruments can be bought in Morocco, it's hard to get the (array of) quality that's standard in Western countries. Certainly the prices in Europe, especially for secondhand items, are much lower for better quality instruments.
For instance, i saw a very nice 2ndhand banjo some musician here in Holland was selling for € 200 which might go for € 1000 new. In Morocco, one would likely never see such a high quality used instrument and if one were to buy it new, it would be even more expensive than the € 1000 it goes for here.
Survival, especially surthrival, is about more than eating well and sleeping comfortably. Indeed, much about modern life is ALREADY below survival levels... So much about modern life is about starvation and suffering, not about prospering, and i mean that quite literally.
Once one has collected the basics on how to eat well, grow food efficiently in rough terrain, etc.,, there comes a point where one should also become proficient in entertainment:
- music [i.e. lyrics and sheet music of a varied collection of songs]
- musical instruments
- being able to use them
- being able to make them
We're human; the poorest people with the simplest lifestyles on the planet still make music together.
